In many ways the ThunderCats' answer to the Mutants' Skycutter vehicles, the Thunderclaw was built by Panthro to aid the ThunderCats in travelling and protecting their friends on Third Earth. Although the ThunderCats had previously employed the use of an aerial-based vehicle of sorts in the form of the Feliner, the Thunderclaw was their first foray into using a small, manoeuvrable, single-pilot aerial vehicle. The Thunderclaw was one of a pair of such vehicles designed and built by Panthro at roughly the same time, the second being the Hovercat, and as such that vehicle is often thought of as a "companion" to the Thunderclaw. Casting a menacing figure as it swoops down on its enemies, the Thunderclaw allows the ThunderCats to transport goods, travel more quickly across danger-filled terrain, and defend themselves and their friends against their enemies.
