How do you reinvent a classic? This is the task that befell the writers of the new ThunderCats animated series when Warner Brothers announced that it would be reinventing the show for a new generation. With the original widely regarded by animation lovers as the cream of the 1980s crop, beloved by many for its immediacy, groundbreaking animation and strong fantasy storytelling, achieving this successfully is no mean feat.
How do you reinvent ThunderCats? The answer is by taking all the key concepts from the original and adding greater emotional weight to all of them.
It is that theme that resounds throughout the ThunderCats series premiere. For, whilst on paper the series has been altered radically, in fact all of the key elements, all of the primary source material that made the original series work, have been faithfully recreated and updated for a new generation, to create a masterpiece of animated storytelling.
Key concepts such as Lion-O, the lead character, growing from a boy into a man before the audience’s eyes. This new series explores that concept metaphorically rather than literally, but expands upon that concept even further, showing that Lion-O, whilst lacking in maturity in many ways, is perhaps the wisest ThunderCat of them all, giving a whole new meaning to the term “Sight Beyond Sight”.
Key concepts such as Mumm-Ra, the hell-spawned demon and Lion-O’s main enemy, now the assassin of Lion-O’s father, adding greater weight to the conflict between the two.
Key concepts such as Grune, the ThunderCat who turns bad, now given greater weight in the depth and extent to which he betrays his people and his friends.
Key concepts such as the marriage of fantasy concepts and technology that was present in the original, given greater weight by the way that Lion-O’s belief in the fabled technology, and the Lizards’ ability to embrace it, could have allowed the ThunderCats to better protect themselves against their enemies. The marriage between fantasy concepts and technology is now a central part of the series’ storyline.
Small, and on paper less essential, aspects of the original ThunderCats concept have also been taken and given extra emotional weight. Not just Lion-O’s relationship with Jaga, which is given further emphasis as a contrast to Lion-O’s relationship with his father Claudus, but also Jaga’s sacrifice to save the other ThunderCats.
There are other aspects that add to the greater impact that this retelling of the ThunderCats saga carries. Primary amongst those is the blurring of the edges between good and evil, providing the series’ villains (the Lizards) with a true motivation and reason to hate the ThunderCats, and showing that the ThunderCats themselves, although doing what they believe is right, may themselves be subject to errors of judgement in their treatment of their enemies.
Whilst Grune may be truly a ThunderCat turned evil, with this blurring of the edges, it’s not beyond question to see other ThunderCats, full of arrogance, pride and a blinkered sense of right and wrong, also committing acts that could be classed as “evil”. And this is the new series’ brilliance – an emotional believability that draws you into the wild and unusual world of the ThunderCats with ease.
Whilst the series on paper appears to be about Lion-O, in actual fact the series is about all the characters and the way they interact with each other in a way that is engaging and believable. The series is about a family, about characters growing and evolving, about action, adventure and fantasy.
It’s the series you’ve been waiting 20 years for.
Feel the magic, hear the roar – the ThunderCats are BACK.

The new show is crap and does zero justice for the original. I feel bad for the new generation stuck with this crap and didnt get the original. This wont last longer than one season. And it shouldnt last longer than one season. The show contradicts the original in many aspects and was painful to watch. Im jus glad I got to see the original and didnt get my mind tainted with this new thundercats. It should have been called Thundercrap
Well said friend! As a loyal thundercat fan from the old school, I agree with your review 100%. So many questions were raised when the news of a recreation of a classic was revealed. I feel the core of the original series remains intact while embracing the new age of animation and story telling that the new generation has become accustomed to. With that said this new series seems to have the potential to captivate today’s audience much as it did for mine… Love the use of original sound effects and screen shots, particularly during the iconic scene of lion-o accessing the power of the sword of omens. Also if I’m not mistaken, the use of the voice of the original lion-o for claudis was awesomely nostalgic. Very excited for the rest of the series!!! Thundercats, HO!!!!!
A great review. As I watched it, I got goosebumps so many times, not only because of nostalgia, but also a faithful revision that captures the essence of the original, yet paints it into something that those now in adulthood can appreciate. With so many others that have tried to respark the interest of these favorite childhood memories, the new Thundercats is one of the few that really do the original series justice and then some. I hope that many more of my generation will enjoy to relive one of the best cartoons we enjoyed as kids.
WOW excellent way to make a comeback. Story line for this cartoon is good.My dvr is set for every week. Now I need those new toys asap!
I get what your saying in your review . But when watched it I got the impression that this was newer gen.. have beening born many gen later after the first thunder cats. Only to have lost some of the values and tech from the frist thundercats . Growing but hiding from rest of third earth.
Ive never been all that interested in Thundercats before, seeing as it was before my time, but after seeing the premiere last night and doing a bit of research Im proud to say I am thoroughly anticipating the next episode. Ill have to watch the old series before I can really appreciate the show as a whole but the new series looks positively amazing.
Growing up and loving the original, I thought the the redux was rather good. The conflict between Tigra and Lion-O, the secretive clerics which Cheetara is a part of and is Panthro alive or dead….. I will keep tuning in!
