Pumm-Ra Ultimates! First Look with Toy Bro

We’re back one last time with the ever-friendly ToyBro to talk our favorite topic, ThunderCats! In this first look at Pumm-Ra, we finally get the opportunity to gleefully discuss an action figure for a character who never had an action figure before. And with the direction this line is going, we’re hoping to see many more of these. Let’s get down to business…

TC.org: We’re ending with the first figure of the line that never had a toy before. Pumm-Ra!!! Were you pleased back in the day to see this reveal?

TB: Absolutely, I’m excited for the potential of this line to expand beyond figures that existed in the vintage line, so this guy is a good sign of things to come.

TC.org: How did the character translate into plastic?

TB: I think they nailed him, he’s pretty “basic” when it comes to this line, though. Not in a negative way, just that he’s basically naked with some soft goods, but in that sense, they really did a good job translating him to figure form.

TC.org: His cloak is made of fabric and is wired. Does it work well or would you have preferred a plastic cloak?

TB: I really like it. No doubt in my mind that due to how weird this thing sits on him, a plastic cloak/robe/whatever it is would have really locked him down. This is wired so you can move it, pose him around and then put it back and it looks like it’s just naturally being worn. It’s an odd piece of clothing for sure, but it works here.

TC.org: Pumm-Ra is obviously Mumm-Ra in disguise. We also get a scaled head to go with the Ever-Living Mumm-Ra. Will you be getting a second Mumm-Ra just for that head?

TB: I have every intention of doing that, as unnecessary as that seems, I want to make use of this head!

TC.org: Which of the two standard sized heads will you use for display, and why?

TB: Probably the more expressive head. He’s a bad guy after all, so I’ll likely have him with the Mutants and use that more evil looking headsculpt.

TC.org: His accessories are very cartoon centric, obviously, since there was only one appearance of Mumm-Ra in this guise. Which is your favourite of them all.

TB: The claw shield, probably, though the covered sword is cool too, both are different from what we’ve gotten so far that they make a nice pairing.

TC.org: Tell us, does the fisted claw shield also fit on other characters, like Lion-O?

TB: It can! It’s not pegged so it just slips over the forearm of the figure, and it can be used by Lion-O just fine.

TC.org: Now everybody’s going to lift up Pumm-Ra’s skirt to see what’s underneath. Since the ThunderCats were originally “naked” in the pilot, and in other flashbacks throughout the show, does this give any indication of what potential variants of the good guys will look like “in the flesh”?

TB: If we somehow got “naked” variants then this is probably a good indicator, there’s really not much to see under there, though.

TC.org: Which other character that never had a toy made would you like to see next? Mandora is on everybody’s lips, so you can’t choose her. Tell us the names of one good guy and one bad guy that you’d like to see in toy form in this line.

TB: The easy answer for a villain would be ANY Lunatak, but more specifically because everyone wants them, I’d love to get an Enflamer. As for a good guy I want to get Jagara sooner rather than later.

TC.org: Let’s settle this argument. Would you call Mirror Lion-O a variant? Some collectors were disappointed by the inclusion of the first “variant”. However it is Mumm-Ra in disguise. If he is a variant, then it means Pumm-Ra is a variant too…

TB: I don’t really consider him a variant. It’s not something changed just for the sake of being a different toy, it has a legitimate place in the show and isn’t actually Lion-O himself, so while its a lot of parts reuse in many ways, it’s not something I consider a variant like some of the glowing exclusives we got in the TMNT line.

TC.org: We’ve definitely started 2022 on the right note, with loads more coming, including Tygra! Shall we catch up again in a few week’s time to talk more ThunderCats?

TB: Most definitely, hopefully VERY soon!
