Snowman Ultimates! First Look with Toy Bro

ToyBro is always willing to sit down and talk with us about all things ThunderCats ULTIMATES!, and with the reveal of the final Wave 4 production figures, we’re back in the saddle again talking ‘Cats! The second of the reviewed figures is the massive Snowman of Hook Mountain. We sat him down (on the other side of the screen, of course) while it was freezing outside—the perfect weather for this first member of the League of Third Earth!

TC.org: Let’s talk about the bulkiest cat rider of them all. Of course we’re referring to the Snowman of Hook Mountain. Do you still get surprised every time you open one of these big figures, even though we know they’re going to be huge?

TB: I absolutely do. I’ve really come to enjoy a lot of these larger, bulkier Ultimates. Bebop, Rocksteady and Muckman really set the tone for what a “big” Ultimates figure can be, and Snowman is right up there with them. He’s just as big and slightly bulkier than all of them. Seeing these really imposing figures definitely does it for me.

TC.org: The Fwoosh’s VeeBee posted a photo of ol’ Snowie here on top of Masterverse’s Battle Cat. Obviously we need Snowmeow in the future, but this gave us a good look at what the scale might be. Would you be down for a big cat in your collection?

TB: 100% yes. I already have a handful of large cats thanks to MOTU Classics. What’s one more? I even nabbed a Masterverse Battle Cat on clearance to try and make a cat for Snowman. I’m no painter by any means, but we’ll see how this goes. But I’d love to get an official Snowmeow. They could even reuse the tooling for the cats that their “The Worst” Ultimates might need one day. Just saying.

TC.org: Snowman is a lovely shade of blue, reminiscent of his vintage toy and cartoon look. Did they perfectly replicate this gentle guardian of Hook Mountain?

TB: I think they did a pretty solid job. This is one of those characters that has a figure that isn’t TOO different from the cartoon. So this one kind of rides a line between both for me, and he matches up pretty nicely on a number of points.

TC.org: Helmet on or helmet off?

TB: For display, it’ll be helmet off. Now, if we get a Snowmeow down the road (or I make one that doesn’t look awful) then it’ll be helmet on. But the sculpt and paint on the head is too good to hide here. He can always hold the helmet.

TC.org: His icey weapons are very impressive! Which would you display him with and why?

TB: Spear and shield for sure. But this is another thing where, if we get a cat, that’d change to the lance and shield. But really they’re all solid options. I really like the way they did the frosted look for the ice weapons, the shield in particular, because it’s covered in a bunch of craggy, faceted detail.

TC.org: Snowman is the first good guy ally in the line with hopefully many more to come. Do you think he is more familiar to collectors than, say, Lynx-O from Season 2?

TB: I can’t imagine either being unfamiliar to actual collectors. He might be more recognizable to casual folks, though, since he’s earlier on in the show. I know there are folks out there who have no idea what happens in the second half of the show or that there even are other ThunderCats.

TC.org: Which good guy ally would you like to see revealed next?

TB: Ro. Bear. Berbils. All of them, any of them, whatever I can get.

TC.org: His size and bulkiness makes one think that articulation will be limited. Is this the case?

TB: To a degree, yes. Mostly his head and his ab crunch. But his arms, legs, hands and feet are pretty normal for the line. He’s certainly constructed in the same way as the rest of the line, but his size does present its own drawbacks, as we’ve seen with other, bigger Ultimates.

TC.org: Overall thoughts on this hairy beauty?

TB: I like him, he’d certainly be infinitely cooler if he came packaged with a giant snow cat, but I’m happy I like him. He’d certainly be infinitely cooler if he came packaged with a giant snow cat, but I’m happy to get this big guy. I was kind of surprised he was coming relatively early in the line, but his spot on the shelf is definitely a welcome sight as he towers over the current selection of Ultimates.
