Notes of Interest
Mongor is one of only three characters LJN put into action figure form off the back of a single appearance in the series. The other two are the Astral Moat Monster and the Tongue-A-Saurus.
He comes from the season one episode Mongor, written by Peter Lawrence, which aired on 3 October 1985. WilyKat and WilyKit shift a hexagonal rock in the Ruined Temple and unwittingly free him, and he grows in power the more the ThunderCats fear him.
The figure is noticeably bulkier than the character was drawn. On screen Mongor is slight in build; LJN gave him a heavier, more substantial body, which is part of why he reads so differently in hand.
Battle-matic Action
Using your forefinger, push down the battle-matic action lever on the back to move Mongor’s arm.
Variations
There are no known variations of the figure itself. Mongor was also issued in Europe on a 14 back card, including Dutch and Belgian packaging.
Collector Tips
Look out for paint wear on flesh tones and brown areas.
The scythe is the piece to check first. It is the only accessory, and a loose Mongor without it is a far more common sight than a complete one.
A Note on Dating
Our own catalogue records Mongor in the Series 2 assortment for 1986, which is what the card backs and the great majority of listings support. Some collector databases place him instead in a third wave dated 1987. We have left the entry at 1986 rather than pick a side on a single conflicting source, and the disagreement is worth knowing about if you are dating a carded example.
Market
Mongor is one of the harder figures in the line to find carded, and prices reflect it. Sealed examples traded between roughly $400 and $650 across 2023 to 2026, with graded pieces asking higher. Figures given here are a snapshot from August 2026, not a live valuation.
