In the original 1985 series, the Thundertank is Panthro's signature engineering project. He builds it. He maintains it. He drives it more than anyone else on the team.

The Thundertank's debut appearance is Berbils, Season 1 Episode 3, originally aired September 11, 1985. After the ThunderCats settle on Third Earth, the Ro-Bear Berbils help Panthro complete the build in their workshop. From that episode forward, the Thundertank appears in roughly half the run of the original 130 episodes, including most of the major Mumm-Ra confrontations.
