Dynamite is putting out a second ThunderCats ongoing, and this one goes back to the cartoon. ThunderCats '85 is written and drawn by George Kambadais, and the first issue is Mumm-Ra against the whole team.

The solicitation names the book as a return to the 1985 series rather than a continuation of anything running now, and Dynamite’s own copy says Kambadais “takes you back to the start, in a stunningly realized vision of the classic THUNDERCATS from 1985”. Issue 1 is 32 pages at $4.99, dated 6 January 2027. Dynamite released three covers with the announcement and no interior pages.

That makes two ThunderCats ongoings at the same publisher from January. The other is the Pak and Cousens relaunch we covered in July, which put the Cats and the SilverHawks on the same Third Earth and turned Lion-O into the Feral King. ‘85 does not connect to that book at all; it is the 1985 cast drawn the way the cartoon drew them, with Snarf in the front row of the team cover!

Cover art for ThunderCats '85 number 1: Lion-O leaping forward with the Sword of Omens raised, Cheetara to his right with her staff, and Tygra, Panthro, WilyKit and WilyKat around them, over a red and yellow halftone ground.

Kambadais has drawn Gargoyles for Dynamite with Greg Weisman, and he has drawn SilverHawks, which Dynamite publishes as well. Dynamite’s own blurb lists him as both writer and artist. Dynamite’s other ThunderCats ongoing splits the job, Pak writing and Cousens drawing.

One thing to be careful with. The three covers Dynamite released all carry the same printed credit line, set as KAMBADIAS, and the teal team cover is signed DREW MOSS in the artwork itself [1]. Bleeding Cool lists the cover artists as Kambadais, Drew Moss, Craig Rousseau and Federico Mele, so at least two of the four have work in this batch and the printed credit does not tell you which cover belongs to whom. Do not assign cover letters to these three from the trade dress.

There is no buy path for ‘85 yet, and there will not be one until closer to the January date. MyComicShop has no ThunderCats ‘85 series at all, read today, and its only “Thundercats 85” result is a 1988 Marvel UK issue that is out of stock. What it does have, new since Monday, is the current Dynamite ThunderCats #1 in stock at cover price, with Add to cart live on every variant [2].

[1] Read off the 2063 by 3131 cover files Dynamite released. The credit on the teal cover sits in the trade-dress strip at top left, spelled KAMBADIAS; the signature sits bottom left in the art and reads DREW MOSS. Dynamite’s own solicitation text spells the name KAMBADAIS, so the printed credit and the press copy do not agree on the spelling either.

[2] MyComicShop series page Thundercats (2026 Dynamite), TID 65378309, read 22 October 2026 under its own In Stock filter: variants 1A through 1E all show Add to cart at $4.99 with no out-of-stock notice. The cover credits on that page read 1A Mark Spears, 1B David Cousens, 1C Daniele Cellini, 1D Stephen Byrne, 1E Seth Damoose.
