The Crossover Landed: Reading Chapters 13, 14 and 15 Off the Covers Themselves

We flagged the three August finales back in June. Now that they have actually shipped, the covers answer a question the solicitations never did: this was a fifteen chapter event, and the last three chapters landed one a week, closing with ThunderHawks #5 on Wednesday.

The Crossover Landed: Reading Chapters 13, 14 and 15 Off the Covers Themselves

Back in June this site ran the pre-order roundup that laid out Dynamite’s three August finales and their dates. All three have now shipped, the last of them on Wednesday, August 26. So this is not the schedule again. This is what the books themselves turned out to say once they were in shops.

The most useful thing is printed in the corner of every cover, and no solicitation mentions it. Beside the ThunderCats insignia, each issue carries its position in the event: 13 OF 15 on ThunderCats X SilverHawks #5, 14 OF 15 on Mumm-Ra The Ever-Living #5, 15 OF 15 on ThunderCats X SilverHawks: ThunderHawks #5.

So the crossover was a fifteen chapter event, and the whole back third of it landed in three consecutive weeks: August 12, August 19, August 26. The trade dress is doing the job the tech spec bios used to do on toy packaging, which is telling you where you are standing without anybody having to announce it.

That also settles the reading order question people keep asking in the forums. ThunderHawks #5 is not a side story that happens to finish last. It is Chapter 15, the final chapter of the whole thing, written by Ed Brisson with art by Vincenzo Federici.

The covers give up credits the solicitations leave out, too. The ThunderCats X SilverHawks trade dress names Igor Monti on colours and Jeff Eckleberry on letters alongside Declan Shalvey and Drew Moss.

A book this new often has not reached a back-issue dealer’s shelves yet, so if you want these this week your local shop is still the faster route.

The other ThunderHawks covers

Dynamite put five cardstock covers on the finale. Cover A by Ivan Tao is above. Here are the other three that are not the Animation Art virgin twin.

Reading the whole run instead

If you came to this late and would rather read the ThunderVerse in collected form than chase fifteen floppies, BigBadToyStore carries Dynamite’s ThunderCats collections. Be warned that the hardcovers are both sold out there right now and only take a waitlist, so the trade paperback of Lost Vol. 1 is the one you can actually put in a cart today. Prices and stock read off BBTS on August 27.

What comes next

The ThunderVerse does not pause for long. Dynamite’s September solicitations put ThunderCats: Cheetara Vol. 2 #1 on sale September 9, written by Saladin Ahmed. Then in October comes the relaunch we wrote about in July, ThunderCats #1 from Greg Pak and David Cousens, on sale October 7.

One loose end on Cheetara worth flagging before anyone quotes it: Dynamite’s own solicitation page spells the artist’s name two different ways in the same entry, Andrea Ancari in the structured credit field and ANDREA ARCARI in the body copy. We have not settled which is right, and we would rather say so than pick one.

Catching up

Our coverage of the crossover starts with ThunderCats X SilverHawks #2 back in May, which the same trade dress marks as Chapter 4 of 15.

If you have read the finale, the forums are the place to argue about it.
