SDCC 2026 Toy Colors LED Review: Lion-O and Mumm-Ra

SDCC 2026 hit with a bang! An unexpected one I might add. Super7 took us back to the toy aisles once again. But this time, considering they’ve recently been literally doing it with their DX line, whose cardbacks were slightly similar to the vintage toy line’s, they really hit the mark.

The cardback is the thing fans kept asking for

This is what we’ve been asking for since day 1. Give us the original cardback. There has been feedback as to why it can’t be made, but after years of begging and fan mock ups, Super7 delivered. And what a way to deliver! We got the cardback with its unique shape and blister, the backsplash and of course, on the back, images similar to the vintage solicitations. What’s more, we even got a throwback to not just the sticker at the bottom that would be color coded too, we also got the Mumm-Ra drawing in the corner. Now that was truly beautiful. Just so you know, I’ve kept my cardbacks and plunked my Wave 6 Mumm-Ra and DX Lion-O Toy Recolor back in, while the LED’s are out on my shelf. They look just too darn cool not to have on display.

This is what we've been asking for since day 1. Give us the original cardback.

Lion-O could’ve been the only figure, but we got both the good and the bad side of the coin. No complaints here, because both cards are exactly the same height. The only difference is the blister size. Works for me! The back of the cards are exactly the same on both. I have to add though that the figures had a plastic sleeve on with warnings about the batteries. Well, I guess you gotta follow the rules. You never know who gets this as a gift. Don’t put it in your mouth folks.

Lion-O, and the three clawshields

So I’ll start off with Lion-O, the obvious choice for this written review. New buck. Tick. LED eyes. Tick. Vintage logo on the belt. Tick. Correct colors. Tick. Vintage sword. Tick. Red clawshield. Tick. This then is where it gets interesting. Apart from all the extra hands (gripping, fists, expressive), there are three clawshields. Now I wondered why. But in hand you can see why. Two of them are the smooth cartoon version, and one of those two clip onto the belt, and can of course carry the small Sword of Omens. TICK. DOUBLE TICK because I actually did not expect this. Would I have liked it to be more toy inspired. Nah. I’m good with that. It works because it is red.

Articulation wise, the figure is nice and solid. It does everything you’d expect it to do. TICK again.

The head’s LED switch is at the bottom of a long piece that is essentially a bulb with a battery container. It works easy enough. The eyes really shine well. When they’re off, they do look kinda weird, but that is understandable. I wish that they had painted the eyes the same way as the one from Wave 6. Even if it were just the outlines. But I understand the reason why they didn’t. Still, to get the most out of the figure, switch on that light. He will shine so bright!

Here are the only minor gripes that I have though. That silver Sword of Omens, the small one, well, that should’ve been red, like the one that DX Snarf carried. This was the perfect opportunity to go all out toy wise, and even if we never got that as a toy version, they gave it to Snarf. And I think that would’ve worked here brilliantly. The only other decision I frown about is the hair. This is not toy accurate hair. I do have to add though, that image of Lion-O on the packaging actually does have this hairdo, so I understand that it mirrors one another like that. But I really would’ve liked the other hairdo on this head instead. That’s as far as minor issues goes, because this figure really is grand. They thought about everything in terms of the packaging, and I’m really sold by that alone.

Mumm-Ra, bigger than you remember

Then of course we get Mumm-Ra.

This guy is huge. I always forget how big he is. They did him justice with the packaging though. He displays so well in this vintage cardback. Bravo. Even the extra space that he takes up works beautifully.

So what’s new here? Besides the fact that this buck is similar to the one from the LED version of 2024, and the head itself is also that exact same head with the headdress matching it, this figure also includes, for the first time, the Sword of Plun-Darr in black and red colours. The BBTS exclusive was colored in reverse. I am happy that we got him here too. It works for me. We still get the extra hands, the dagger, the blade, and all the wrappings that are all over him, but we do not get a cape. Now granted, the original did not have it. But I have to say, it would’ve been nice to include it, because there was a prototype with a cape.

Articulation is exactly the same as all the other Mumm-Ra figures, and he moves well for such a beast. Do heat up the hands a little when you want to put the weapons in, as they are tight, and it can cause some paint chipping.

Back to the head for a minute, but just to give kudos to Super7 for being clever, they did mirror that little picture of Mumm-Ra on the vintage art (also featured on the new packaging) by creating that screaming head. That is why I understand the Lion-O has that hair, since that’s mirrored. This finally gives us a Mumm-Ra figure in toy colors with that head. And it glows. Yes, boys and girls, the eyes glow, but also so does the chest. As with the 2024 exclusive, the chest piece is also clear plastic that lights up when you switch on the LED feature. I like it a lot more with this figure than with the cartoon counterpart. Still, it’s a clever bonus feature. I mean they could’ve stuck with just the eyes, right?

I love that both of these figures take you back to the 80s, but this Mumm-Ra does so more than Lion-O. And it is purely because of the hair that is taking that away from the Lion-O for me. But this Mumm-Ra face screams vintage ThunderCats. The packaging is of course the big seller here, and while I’ve had many people say don’t open it, I did cut it out properly on the sides to put in my replacements and still display it.

In the meantime, go get yourself Mumm-Ra too while you’re out there shopping. This guy is a whopping $94.99 at BBTS, and while he is on the very expensive side, it makes absolute sense. And it is worth it. Once you hold it in hand, you will be taken right back to the days of careless smiles.
