Super7 surprised everybody at Toy Fair earlier this year when they revealed ThunderCats Wave 4 DELUXE ahead of its Spring release. The wave itself had quite the journey to make it into collectors’ hands. Some were Target exclusives for a period, while others turned up on Walmart’s site. All of them, however, also made their way into stores across the US before finally making their debut on super7.com and other e-retailers. Not at the same time, mind you.

The biggest surprise of the wave was probably Mumm-Ra (Old Man). Besides the fact that this was the first time a wave consisted of three figures instead of the regular two, we got two characters who had not been available in ULTIMATE! format in this new look before. Sure, we got Mumm-Ra in Wave 1 in his decrepit form, and Mirror Lion-O in Wave 5 using the old buck, but as surprising as Wave 3 was with its toy inspired outings of Lion-O and Snarf, this was a big bold move by Super7. And Mumm-Ra took the cake. And ate it.

Mirror Lion-ONew 2.0 buck. Clawshield and shiny Sword of Omens.

I will get the obvious out of the way. These figures come in the standard blister packaging reminiscent of the vintage toy packaging from the 80s. That in itself is already a plus in my books. While I have not seen the DELUXE released in stores here in sunny South Africa, I know from past experience that anything that slightly resembles the vintage packaging immediately draws my attention to that aisle. The back art remains the same throughout the series with no bios or any reference to the character on the packaging. There is a piece in the front of the blister though that tells you exactly who is inside. Just for clarity. You know.

Mumm-Ra (Old Man)

Mumm-Ra (Old Man) arrived this side of the globe first. I was so excited that I opened it live during the review and never photographed the figure in its blister packaging. Can you blame me though? I was really looking forward to getting this guy (he arrived back in April already) simply because this was a new buck. Yes, Super7 went ahead and produced a completely new buck for Mumm-Ra. And since we were not all privy to the fact that he would also appear in Wave 15 in his ULTIMATE! form, this was a nice, affordable surprise.

So what is new here? Well, everything. A new two-toned cape (wired). We finally have one that matches the toon. Ironically, I never noticed this, even when he was revealed. I had just always assumed the inside was shade, but Super7 made the wise move to give his cape a cartoon accurate colour scheme. Kudos. The whole buck is brand new too. The legs can finally close for a change. If you ever struggled to get your Wave 1 or Mattel exclusive to stand on its own two feet, well, now you do not have to anymore. His legs do what they were meant to do from the start.

Articulation wise everything works just great here. And like before, you can change out his head and hands with other figures. I actually use this DELUXE version with the Mumm-Ra head wearing the enchanted Golden Helmet of Pharnoor. The cape has a clip under the neck, and unlike the ULT! version, is not stitched together. This makes putting on that head easier for me on this figure. And while the ULT! one has some shading on the bandages, this one does not feel inferior in any way. He is pure magic. From the upper torso to the waist swivel, he is a piece of art that you can pose any way you want.

Another thing I never picked up until I had him in hand were the white dots in his eyes. And yes, in the toon that is how he appeared. Again, like the cape, I just assumed it was to do with light and shading. But Super7 went ahead and gave us that on the figure, and does he stand out even better now. It gives so much more character to his facade. While the figure has no accessories included, the hands you get here are a surprise. They are not the standard gripping hands. Nope. Here you have him holding his hands out in powered-up mode, ready to blast the wretched ThunderCats with energy beams (that option is available with his ULTIMATE! counterpart). The hands being like this was already a good thing in my books. It gave so much more personality to this figure.

The day my guy arrived I had to show him off to a friend who had no inkling as to what ThunderCats was. But Mumm-Ra, with his secret powers of persuasion, made such an impression that my friend said “I want one too”. I have never bought a ThunderCats present so fast. It was a pleasure to ship it out too, and I believe that those who had laid their eyes upon this majestic figure in its new home responded the same. They want him too. You go Mumm-Ra. You got fans in the south of Africa too.

Ghost Jaga

For the first time since forever, we are getting Jaga, as most of us remember him from the toon, in his ghostly form available in store. Well, as an articulated figure anyway. I bet a lot of 80s kids will be over the moon spotting him on the shelves. This was also a clever move from Super7, who recently rereleased his ULT! counterpart again. Seeing as back in the 80s we only got his human form in toy form, and also in the ULTIMATES! line he first appeared in his human form in Wave 3, making him available in the DELUXE subline as Ghost Jaga is very welcome.

So what is different with Ghost Jaga? This is the exact same sculpt, but the cheaper edition. If there is any nice way of saying it. But do not think that since it is cheaper the quality is to be concerned about. No, not at all. The DELUXE line has proven to be a hit with fans, and it fits in really well with the more superior ULT! counterparts. This figure, when compared to its ULT! version, is nothing to be frowned upon. Sure, there is no shading on here, and the cape does not have that frosted look the exclusive has. It also only has two gripping hands and one Sword of Omens. But other than that, it is really the same. If you are not as bothered by these things, then DELUXE Ghost Jaga is for you. I actually want to paint the eyes of mine red seeing as Mumm-Ra once appeared as Ghost Jaga to trick poor Jagara.

This Ghost Jaga might not be as elaborate in its offering, but it is a solid entry. I am just happy he is on the toy shelves again. Plus he is see-through, so that in itself is already a bonus.

Mirror Lion-O

Mirror Lion-O is the second new buck figure of the wave. While we already have a Mirror Lion-O in the ULT! line, sporting the original (pinless) buck of the Wave 1 Lion-O, this time we are getting the new 2.0 buck that we also first saw as a DELUXE figure, and as the LED ULTIMATES! Lion-O. Its DELUXE Wave 1 counterpart recently had a reissue with an updated skin tone. I got that after seeing pictures of it compared to the first release, and I have to say he is worth getting your hands on. This Mirror Lion-O has the exact same skin tone of the reissue. Just in case you were wondering.

Super7 ThunderCats DELUXE Mirror Lion-O with the shiny Sword of Omens and gold Clawshield

The colour on this one just pops. The reds run deeper than the ULT! release. Tap to see the figure page.

He has the exact same articulation as you would expect from Lion-O. He comes with the shiny Sword of Omens (just the regular sized version, not the smaller one) and the gold Clawshield. It fits onto his arm with ease. Just take out the hand and you slide the Clawshield right over it. It even holds the Sword of Omens. It does not, however, pin to his belt, but there are so many Clawshields from before that can, so you probably already have one for this.

The colour on this guy just pops. Way better than the ULT! one. For some reason the reds are just deeper and more powerful, and I adore this version of him. Do we need him in ULT! format? I will not nitpick if we never got him. Would I want him as an LED version? You bet. Seeing as we just got the LED toy inspired Lion-O and Mumm-Ra for SDCC 2026, this could make for a great alternate somewhere down the line.

He does not have a stoic face, so you need to be prepared for that. While I would have liked an alt head here, I am happy with him as he is. His face speaks evil, and this Mumm-Ra in disguise is perfect for any shelf. This is a clear winner. And yes, it is the umpteenth Lion-O, but how can we not like this one when it turned out so cool?

Where the wave leaves us

I am really looking forward to seeing if Super7 will be revealing Wave 5 at SDCC this year. We now know that the DELUXE waves are out every Spring and Autumn, so we already know when to look forward to it. This was a solid wave and I look forward to seeing some surprises in Wave 5. Anybody for a toon Panthro perhaps?
